ONE National Gay & Lesbian Archives presents Meeting in the Margins: 60 Years of Queer Organizations in the Archive, an exhibition of LGBTQ organizations in Los Angeles presenting an extensive range of materials – documents, photographs, publications, video, t-shirts, banners, signs, ephemera and artworks – from the collections at ONE Archives. As part of ONE’s 60th Anniversary initiative to spotlight the organizational history of queer L.A., this exhibition is intended to further highlight little known histories for the public.
Following the exhibition Defiant Spaces: 60 Years of Queer Organizations in L.A. organized by ONE Archives at Los Angeles City Hall in June 2012, Meeting in the Margins will investigate numerous organizations in greater depth and complexity suitable for viewing in an archival setting. The exhibition strives to shed new light on numerous little-known organizations and histories, considering a wide variety of organizations including social groups, activist collectives, legal rights organizations and community service providers.
Some organizations profiled include: ACT-UP/L.A.; Black and White Men Together, Los Angeles (BWMT/LA); the Blue Max Motorcycle Club; Catch One; the Los Angeles Gay Liberation Front (L.A. GLF); the Southern California Women for Understanding; and the Transsexual Action Organization (TAO).
In February 2013 ONE will mount an exhibition at the ONE Archives Gallery & Museum specifically dedicated to queer publications from Los Angeles as a part of ONE’s 60th. This exhibition plus Meeting in the Margins and Defiant Spaces will complete a suite of exhibitions on queer organizing in Los Angeles.
Meeting in the Margins: 60 Years of Queer Organizations in the Archive will be on view at ONE National Gay & Lesbian Archives beginning October 6, 2012. The opening of this exhibition coincides with the event “Letters to ONE: From Fringe to Forefront.”
Meeting in the Margins is organized by David Frantz, Curator at ONE National Gay & Lesbian Archives. Generous support for exhibitions and programming during ONE’s 60th Anniversary is provided by Wells Fargo.
