Johnny Abush died on November 26, 2000 of pneumonia. Johnny was an
activist, archivist, inventor and computer analyst. He worked as a
systems analyst for 15 years until he was forced to retire in 1990 due
to AIDS.
Johnny founded the Jewish Lesbian Gay and Transgendered Archives (LGBT
Archives). The collection is unique and the largest in the world
encompassing print, film, video, music and crafts.
Johnny believed he was twice blessed by being Jewish and gay. In his
"retirement," Johnny helped found Chutzpah and then Keshet Shalom.
He worked on several committees including the Jewish Queer Culture Committee
and was a volunteer at Casey House.
His courage, struggle, perseverance and love of life was an inspiration to
all of us.
The ONE National Gay & Lesbian Archives is now the custodian
for the Twice Blessed collection and website. ONE Archives is continuing
the work of Johnny Abush by adding other Jewish LGBT materials to significant
holdings entrusted to our care by Johnny, and his family and friends.
