One Institute Announces 2018 LGBTQ
Research Program Fellows
Los Angeles, California, April 5, 2018 – The One Institute, Inc. is pleased to announce its 2018 LGBTQ Research Fellows.
The One Institute received 60 applications for the inaugural year of the LGBTQ Research Fellowship Program, which offers limited-term research fellowships to support scholars engaged in graduate-level, post-doctoral, and independent research conducted at the ONE National Gay & Lesbian Archives at the University of Southern California (USC) Libraries. Nine Fellows have been selected.
“We know that the need for research around LGBTQ history is critical, which is why the One Institute is providing this important resource to contribute toward deeper scholarship around LGBTQ history and its importance in advancing social change. The Fellowship program further enhances the One Institute’s LGBTQ education initiatives.” said Jennifer C. Gregg, Executive Director of the One Institute.
Dr. Joseph Hawkins, Director of the ONE Archives at the USC Libraries added, “The number of applications received speaks to the expansive holdings we have in our collections. With more than 3,000,000 pieces of LGBTQ history located at the ONE Archives at the USC Libraries, the Fellows will have vast resources available for their research.”
The 2018 LGBTQ Research Fellows and their topics are:
Chris Babits – To Cure a Sinful Nation: “Conversion Therapy” and the Making of Modern America, 1920 to Today
Leia K. Cain – LGBTQ+ Primary Sources in Teacher Education Study
René Esparza – Latinx ACT UP: Queer Chicana/o and Puerto Rican Transnational AIDS Activism
Yetta Howard – Rated RX: Sheree Rose with and after Bob Flanagan
Nora Kassner – A Woman in the House: LGBTQ Parents in the American Welfare State, 1964-2015
Abram J. Lewis – The Falling Dream: Unreason and Enchantment in the Gay Liberation Movement
Kate Litterer – Lisa Ben, Lesbian: Queering Rhetorical Circulation
Kevin Quin – Queer Visions of the Black Past: Black Gay and Lesbian Cultural Politics, 1970-1989
Eric Wat – Angels of the Epidemic: An Oral History of Asian & Pacific Islander AIDS Activism in Los Angeles
Fellows are invited to conduct research between May 2018 and December 2018. Desired outcomes include scholarly writings, publications, and media and art projects. Fellows receive up to $1,500 to support their research. Each fellow is required to write a blog post or report of approximately 500 words about the project and work completed at the ONE Archives at the USC Libraries by the end of the award period.
